Jenny Pynt is a physiotherapist who received her PhD from The University of Sydney in 2003. Professor Joy

Higgs AM was her doctoral supervisor. In her thesis Dr Pynt proposed that 3 criteria are essential to optimal seat design. These criteria are considerations of health and task of the seated person as well as aesthetic appeal.

This book addresses the challenge set by Professor Galen Cranz from the architecture department of University of California at Berkeley, to address the confusion in the scientific literature pertaining to the effect of sitting on the health of the low back.

It is written for those who design and those who use seats, to better inform them of the potential for ill health from the daily act of sitting, even for periods as short as ten minutes.

This book examines the relationship between sitting posture and seating design and the health of the low back. It is written by physiotherapists for people who sit for leisure or in the office, for people who design seating and for health professionals involved in the treatment of clients with back pain. Current and past scientific literature regarding sitting posture and seating design is clarified and distilled into a readily accessible format, with regular summaries. The reported research demonstrates that some popular leisure seat designs encourage poor sitting postures leading to low back pain, the onset of

which may not occur until the following day. The book makes recommendations for enhancement of seating design, education and use in the office and beyond.
